XV. Foundation of Truth and Knowledge

I examine myself in the light of truth and knowledge of theory based on scientifically reproducible discovery. My present understanding of science reveals to me, that I am a living individual called an organism. An organism is a formation of matter and energy capable of absorbing from the surrounding environment, processing internally, and excreting into the surrounding environment the correct kinds of matter and energy to grow, and reproduce.  In the case of single cell organisms, a semi-permeable membrane permits the absorption and excretion of the correct kinds of matter and energy from and to its surroundings to grow, and reproduce by means of division. In the case of multiple cell organisms such as humans, growth and reproduction involves the formation of a seed body.

A seed body is a body that grows from a seed.  A seed is a kind of single cell organism. A seed forms from the union of sperm and egg. Male seed body produces sperm and female seed body produces egg. When male and female seed bodies of the same species join in sexual embrace then sperm and egg may join to produce seed.  A species is a distinct category of life form requiring mating with its’ own kind to produce a viable seed. A need of the seed is to feed and to breed. A seed feeds in order to develop into a body. A seed body breeds in order to remain a living link from one generation to the next. A body develops from the living seed and reflects the needs of both seed and body to create and survive in its design.  If successful, then a body consumes the correct kinds of material and energy from its’ environment in order to develop, survive, breed, perform any species specific parental duties before the fractal, infernal, temporal, body that develops from the seed succumbs to its’ ultimate fate to be eaten by still other organisms through a natural process of disease and death. So goes the drama of life and death in a body-consuming biosphere where every life form, every organism, great and small, plays the dual role of predator and prey in a conflict that characterizes the game of survival and sacrifice, test of success and failure, and catharsis of comedy and tragedy. I classify human beings as organisms of multi-cellular structure forming a seed body distinct from all others as that being of the human species.

The life of seed bodies evolved from and with single celled organisms known as bacteria. All seed bodies are dependent on bacteria.  It is estimated by scientists that 500 to 100,000 species of bacteria live in the human body. Bacterial cells are much smaller than human cells, and there are about ten times as many bacteria cells as there are human cells in the body; 1000 trillion versus 100 trillion; or 1E15 versus 1E14. We live in close association with bacteria. They are at the least harmless, and in some cases needed for health. The external and internal surfaces of our seed body, skin, mouth, and gut, are covered with bacteria. These microorganisms are provided with a nice place to live, with a good supply of food and a more or less constant temperature. In return, they compete with pathogenic bacteria, and in this way they form a protection against disease. The host and the bacteria both gain from this peaceful living together, scientists call this commensalism. The normal microflora of our surfaces are called commensals. We are dependent on our commensals in other ways as well: they help us digest our food and produce vital vitamins. Insects that can live on wood can do so because their commensals can digest cellulose, the building block of plant cells. Cows can eat grass because of their commensals. That's why we can't live on the diet of herbivores: we lack the right bacteria. When your gut is fully loaded with 'good' bacteria, they provide a degree of protection against pathogens that have to compete for food. This is how 'probiotic' food is designed. One would need to eat such foods on a daily basis to be effective.  Fortunately our body also has an immune system to combat pathogens.  If your gut commensals are decreased in numbers, for instance due to a course of antibiotics that was needed to combat an infection, diarrhea may be the result. That is what happens if we destroy our commensals.

Now I turn my attention away from self and towards world.  I begin as before by examining our world in the light of truth and knowledge of theory based on scientifically reproducible discovery. For the purposes of this examination, I define ‘world’ as the existence of one totality being inclusive of the natural known universe and any mystery beyond. Science reveals to us that as life forms we are part of a body-consuming biosphere divided by a primal conflict between predator and prey, on a crusted magma globe, with a sun and a moon reproducible, in a galaxy of stars, and a universe of galaxies. All of these known structures of energy including earth exist surrounded by vast quantities of empty space and appear to have been speeding away from a central point of origin at velocities approaching the speed of light for many billions of years. This expansion may be a consequence of a big bang. The cause of this big bang remains a mystery to science. The effect seems to have been to create a tiny island of life in a vast ocean of death.

I examine the future in the light of truth and knowledge of theory based on scientifically reproducible discovery. Science informs me that the life of a seed body follows a predictable course of conception, gestation, birth, growth, puberty, maturity, aging, disease, and death. At any point during the life cycle of a seed body, forces of the surrounding world such as predators, accidents and or natural disasters may cause termination of life to occur before completion of an entire life cycle.  While a small part of an individual may continue to live on through the contribution of sperm or egg to the creation of a living seed, science offers little hope for the survival of a seed body beyond a single brief existence, and no guarantees that this single brief existence will be lived to its’ fullest.

As for our body-consuming biosphere, science informs me its’ future is finite and tenuous at best. Evolution of life appears to have progressed with  gradual incremental change during relatively tranquil periods in the planet’s history. Evolution of life also appears to have progressed with sudden catastrophic change during relatively turbulent periods in the planet’s history such as sixty five million years ago when the impact of a small asteroid into the Earth’s crust may have precipitated the mass extinction of the dinosaurs. Maybe the drama of life and death will continue to be staged on planet Earth until the Sun burns out some billions of years from now or maybe some cosmic or man made catastrophe will end the staging of the drama of life and death here on Earth today.

Based on my brief examination of existence in the light of truth and knowledge of theory based on scientifically reproducible discovery I conclude that the seed body appears to be finite, infernal, and temporal.  Some atheistic negativists may choose to see them selves as seed bodies existing for a brief time on a tiny planet of life in a vast universe of death.  Death may appear to them as the norm and life the abnormality. The meaning of life may appear to them to be its’ own self-perpetuation. The motivations in everything one says or does may appear to them to be the product of the biochemical functions of a meat machine. Those who accept such appearances as reality, may wind up feeling sorrow, fear, and anger, as disease and death draw ever closer. Some may lose hope and faith, give up, turn to crime and or drugs, in a reckless attempt to fill the remainder of their lives with as many fleeting moments of pleasure as is possible. Some may become aggressive, depressed, or suicidal. Some may do nothing, act helpless, and exhibit sad, mad and or bad behavior.

My task is to create in my mind a model of the existence of one totality that is capable of best satisfying my need and aspiration to achieve and maintain health and happiness. I have defined health essentially as being a successful predator. Success is being able to attract the matter and energy necessary to achieve and maintain survival. Survival is achieved and maintained when behavior is in accord with a standard of conduct dictated by laws of cause and effect that predict the behavior, fate, and destiny of matter and energy in the known universe. Truth and knowledge of theory based on scientifically reproducible discovery is a powerful tool that a predator may apply to problems pertaining to achieving and maintaining health. I believe if truth and knowledge of theory based on scientifically reproducible discovery is applied to problems pertaining to happiness to the exclusion of myth and fantasy based on the existence of discovery and mystery, then truth and knowledge of theory based on scientifically reproducible discovery fails because emotional forces of sorrow, fear, and anger are produced by thoughts, beliefs, and expectations that follow from the discovery of the impending disease and death of the seed body. I believe that negative emotional forces of sorrow, fear and anger if not balanced by countervailing emotional forces of joy, faith and love may lead to sad, mad and bad behaviors that are inconsistent with health.  Belief that the seed body is all that there is to self and discovery of the impending disease and death of the seed body may cause some to adopt a strategy of filling the remainder of their brief lives with a pursuit of fleeting moments of pleasure. This strategy in turn may lead some to excessive use of recreational drugs to the point where serious health problems arise.

In drugs, some may think, believe, and expect that they have found a material solution to the problem of emotional unbalance. Drugs have their place in the treatment of disease. Some may seek to use drugs to stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain and thereby alter their perception of reality. Recreational drug use and or abuse may simply lead to a bad trip in the minds of those who are faced by unfortunate life circumstances; and choose to fashion reality in their own minds by combining finite truth and knowledge of theory; with a pessimistic myth and fantasy about the existence of only things scientists can find and only things theories predict; and call the resulting model of the existence of one totality a rational default position. A bad trip is a frightening or depressing drug experience.  Over time users tend to require ever larger doses to achieve the same pleasure inducing effects because major changes in brain chemistry and or brain damage caused by drug use may have the effect of making these drugs less effective at stimulating the brain to feelings of pleasure. Some users may flood their blood streams with pleasure inducing recreational drugs and interfere with the operation of their nervous systems to the point where these drugs effectively disable their minds.  Because the nervous system of the body controls organs of the immune system, some users may also end up disabling their immune systems leading to higher risk of disease and death. Maybe recreational drugs that stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain offer users a false solution to the problem of achieving and maintaining happiness and health. In a body-consuming biosphere where every organism great and small plays the dual role of predator and prey, I do not equate using recreational drugs to the point of disabling my mind and body with healthy behavior. I believe to behave in this manner does not serve my need and aspiration to be happy or to be healthy.

The way to win a war on illegal recreational drugs is to legalize. If we legalize then the vast sums of money that criminals are collecting selling illegal recreational drugs will dry up because drug addicts will be able to get their recreational drugs legally for far less. The cost to society would be too high is the usual argument against legalizing. The implication being that if illegal recreational drugs were legal then there would be far more people suffering from the disabling effects of drug addiction and far more people dying of drug over doses. I believe if illegal recreational drugs were legal then there would be little financial incentive driving dealers to push illegal recreational drugs on potential addicts. If there was little financial incentive driving dealers to push illegal recreational drugs on potential addicts, then I believe there would be fewer addicts, fewer popular songs glorifying the gangster lifestyle, and far less illegal recreational drug related violence and crime. We know that much of vast sums of money that criminals collect selling illegal recreational drugs ends up in the hands of terrorists. It is the cost to society of protecting drug addicts from themselves that is simply too high.

I focus on the idea that there is tremendous healing power in using ideas that are both possible and imaginable to build a framework of myth and fantasy based on the existence of discovery and mystery that when believed to be true produces powerful emotional responses of joy, faith, and love by enabling me to have the most optimistic thoughts, beliefs and expectations about the existence of one totality. Ideas are thoughts, beliefs and expectations about existence. Ideas produce emotional forces. Ideas that produce powerful emotional forces of sorrow, fear, and anger stress the seed body and are a pathway to disease of body and sad, mad and bad behavior.  Ideas that produce powerful emotional responses of joy, faith, and love are a pathway to happiness, health and glad behavior.

Belief that the seed body is all that there is to self and discovery of the impending disease and death of the seed body may cause some to adopt a strategy of filling the remainder of their brief lives with a pursuit of fleeting moments of pleasure. This strategy in turn may lead some to excessive pursuit of sexual gratification to the point where serious health problems arise.   Most of the serious health problems that can arise due to sex can be traced to the exchange of bodily fluids.  Sex can be a pathway to disease because some microscopic predators use bodily fluid exchanges that occur during sexual intercourse to travel from body to body.

A belief that the seed body is all that there is to self is consistent with a model of existence that produces low esteem of the existence of one totality. Emotional forces of sorrow, fear, and anger, that follow from low esteem of the existence of one totality caused by a belief that the seed body is all that there is to self may make long term relationships with sexual partners difficult for some. Difficulty maintaining long term relationships and the excessive pursuit of sexual gratification may lead some to engage in serial monogamy, promiscuity, or even acts of rape in an effort to fill the remainders of their brief lives with a pursuit of fleeting moments of pleasure. Belief in a most optimistic myth about the existence of one totality might eliminate much of the sense of urgency that motivates some to reckless acts in an effort to fill the remainders of their brief lives with a pursuit of fleeting moments of pleasure.

There are many different bodily fluids that could be exchanged during sex that might cause sexually transmittable disease including and not limited to semen, blood, and saliva. Of all ways that bodily fluids might be exchanged during sex, the act of depositing semen from one body into another body may be the most dangerous pathway to sexually transmittable disease. If semen came from a body that carries a sexually transmittable disease then that semen may contain microscopic predators that could multiply to excess in bodies that live and die and cause disease and even death. The danger from the exchange of bodily fluids during sexual intercourse can be reduced. If the participants in sexual intercourse agree before beginning that a condom will be used as a barrier separating the masculine throbbing erection doing the penetrating from soft, warm, moist, undulating feminine orifice being penetrated then the deposit of semen from one body into another body can be blocked. If use of a condom is not an acceptable solution to participants in sexual intercourse then deposit of semen from one body to another body can be prevented by withdrawing the masculine throbbing erection doing the penetrating from the soft, warm, moist, undulating feminine orifice being penetrated before ejaculation occurs.  In general participants in sexual intercourse can also reduce the danger from the exchange of bodily fluids by using better judgment in selecting sexual partners.

Exchanges of body fluids through airborne water particles exhaled as breath can be a pathway to airborne disease. Airborne water particles can carry microscopic predators that multiply in bodies that live and die and cause disease from one body to another through a process of breathing in exhalations of breath from other bodies. Maybe particles of smoke exhaled by smokers could also carry microscopic predators that multiply in bodies that live and die from one body to another through a process of breathing in exhalation of breath from other bodies. We all have to breathe. I prefer to meet with large groups of people in open spaces. I avoid large groups of people crowded in to a room where in I am made to breathe in every body else's exhalations for an extended period of time.

I believe that there is more to me than a seed body that lives and dies. I believe in a most optimistic myth about the existence of one totality. As such I feel no urgency to adopt a strategy of filling the remainder of my brief life with fleeting moments of pleasure. I find that loving myself is a prerequisite to being loved by some body else. I find that loving my world is a prerequisite to loving myself. I love myself and my world by having the highest esteem of the existence of one totality. I put truth and knowledge of theory based on scientifically reproducible discovery in its’ proper place as a finite infernal temporal part of the existence of one totality that may involve things whose quantities of energy, qualities of space, lengths of time and denominators of continuum have yet to be discovered; and may in combination with discovered things constitute the totality of a being whose characteristic attributes are infinite, divine, eternal, and one without violating any of the known laws of science.
